Who should attend
This course is for workers, contractors or managers who need to be aware of the risks of working with tools and plant.
You must have completed a Foundation course before booking this Passport Plus course.
There are no Unit Standards attached to this Plus – Tools and Plant course
What you'll learn
You will learn how to:
- Keep yourself and others safe onsite.
- Develop an understanding of their health and safety responsibilities.
In Part One (Behavioural safety):
- The reasons to being safe.
- How role models influence the actions of other workers.
- How to make health and safety conversation positive.
- How health and safety culture and the mindset is shaped by role models and conversations.
- What actions to take to improve worker health and safety.
In Part Two (Tools and Plant-specific content):
- The risk assessment process and hierarchy of controls (review from the Foundation course).
- How to identify hazards and controls involved when:
- Using various tools and equipment.
- Working around mobile plant and machinery.
- How to identify safe practices when guiding or spotting for mobile plant.
- How to identify the importance of housekeeping.
At the end of the course, you'll complete a Review of Understanding. This is a set of multiple-choice questions that check your understanding of the key concepts learned during the course.
If you pass, you will be issued a digital Site Safety Card, valid for 2 years.
What you'll get
On completion of the course requirements, you’ll receive:
- A Site Safety Card, valid for 2 years. Most major New Zealand contractors require workers to have a valid Site Safety Card before entering a construction site.
- 4 Licensed Building Practitioner points.
- 3 credits towards our Health and Safety in Construction certificate programme.
Next learning steps
You'll need to complete another Site Safe course every 2 years to keep your Site Safety Card current.

Cancellations, refunds and frequently asked questions
If English is your second language
To complete this course, you need to be able to read and understand English.
Other courses, languages and regions are available on request – or we may be able to provide you an interpreter or allow you to bring your own interpreter.
If you miss the course
If you would like to know more about refunds when a course is missed, refer to our Terms and Conditions.
Cancellations and refunds
You can cancel or change a booking up to 5 working days before the start of the course. If you cancel more than 5 days before the start of the course, you will receive a credit on your account to be used within 12 months, or you (or your employer, if they paid for the course) can request a refund by:
- Completing the Refund Request Form.
- Emailing it to us at accountspayable@sitesafe.org.nz.
Refunds are usually processed in 7 to 14 days.
Within 5 working days of the course starting, you can transfer your seat to another person from the same company. If you cancel, you or your employer will not get a refund.
Changes and cancellations can be made through your account, or through your employer if they booked you on the course.
