Leadership in Safety


A one-day course designed to develop workplace leaders who inspire health and safety improvements on-site.

Target audience

  • Entry level forepersons, supervisors or managers, or experienced forepersons, supervisors or managers if they have learnt on the job and would benefit from having a framework put around their knowledge, skill and experience, or an opportunity to refresh their knowledge of the principles involved 
  • Those with responsibilities in any of the following:  supervising teams or sites, training, supervision and monitoring of workers (including informally, e.g. mentoring, facilitating toolbox talks, etc.), competence assessments, contributing competence information to SSSP/risk management documentation, developing training policies, procedures and programmes (formal or informal) 
  • Learners who may or may not have taken Supervisor course

Learning outcomes

  • Identify the traits, communication styles and tools of an effective leader
  • Recognise and apply effective tools to identify and support the mental health and wellbeing of others on-site
  • Recognise and apply effective tools and methods for shaping a positive H&S culture and improving performance in the workplace
  • Understand the importance and impact of the positive and effective H&S conversations that leaders have
  • Define the legal responsibilities of a H&S leader and recognise the documentation required to support this responsibility

How you will be assessed

You will need to complete and submit a take home assignment within 3 months of attending the course.

What the course covers

The LIS course focuses on providing Learners with:

  • Clear understanding of what leadership is.
  • Explanation of what leadership in safety looks like
  • Practical tools and advice to take back to the workplace
  • Learners are asked questions
  • Learners are asked to share experiences
  • Learners are encouraged to work collaboratively to solve problems
  • Learners are encouraged to consider how skills shared will work in their own workplace

Language requirements

To complete this course successfully, learners must be able to read and understand conversational English. If you are not comfortable with English comprehension or if you need assistance in choosing the right course for you please contact us.

What you'll get at the end of the course

  • A Site Safety Card (Passport) valid for two years
  • A downloadable and printable E-certificate to celebrate your achievement
  • 7 credits towards the Health and Safety in Construction Programme
  • 8 Licensed Building Practitioner points

Next learning steps

Completing this course and passing the assignment means you'll gain site access for the next two years.

When it's time to renew your site access again you don't need to complete the same course - expand your health and safety knowledge with a different course that's relevant to you. Have a look at the pathway examples for more training options or progress your height learning.

Please note: If you are attending a 1 or 2 day Site Safe course then you need to bring with you a form of identification that can be verified (travel passport, birth certificate or residency certificate). This is required by NZQA and the Tertiary Education Commission.
